Somewhere in a not-so-quiet corner of Jiyuugaoka, lies a lovely little camera shop.Old cameras, vintage and once-loved cameras line up on the showcase-shelves, surrounded by trinkets and knick-knacks.
The shop is called Popeye Camera.
Popeye Camera’s been around since 1936 — that’s nearly as long as my grandmother’s been on earth — and while the shop interior is new and shiny, it’s soul smells like old wood. It’s a shop full of character, gutsy and utterly one-of-a-kind that walking into it brings a smile onto my face every single time. It’s made such an impression on me, and my wallet, that I’m returning every month not only to develop my photos, but to also let ol’ nostalgia sink in. Popeye’s loves old things and isn’t afraid to show it, while embracing the newer, more funky toy cameras and new takes on stationery items.
The prices are around the same as Singapore and the average time it takes to develop a roll of photographs ranges, from my experience, 4 hours to 4 days. Prices are competitive and the friendly services compels me to make the forty-minute train ride out into the suburbs.
