At one point, I remember my friends wondering where the illumination set-up was. Um hi, you’re looking right at it. It’s a far-cry from the razzle-dazzle of Orchard Road, but Tokyo’s Illumination scene thrives more on understated beauty rather than larger-than-life displays.
Christmas in Japan was spent with my family in an old hotel room over looking a Duck River (鴨川, literally translated that would be ‘duck river’) and eating a feast procured from the food halls of Mitsukoshi. Not the ideal Christmas one would spend in Sapporo, but one that will forever remain close to my heart as the first Christmas spent abroad with my family.
But enough about that! Marunouchi’s Christmas Illumination came in a few phases, culminating in a rather spectacular light-up on Christmas Day. Sadly I wasn’t around and chose to go for the pre-game warm up the prior week. With a couple of friends, we walked from Yurakucho Station to the neighbouring Tokyo Station area, breezing past the lights around the Marunouchi Buildings.
I went a little crazy with trying to induce the bokeh effect on half of my pictures, which turned out to be 50% gorgeous and 50% drunk-person-with-no-auto-focus. I’m currently working on a custom bokeh filter from a few tutorials, and I’m hoping to test-run in some time soon!
What’s the Christmas decorations back in your neck of the woods? Singapore had really Fabulous (with a capital F) set ups around 10 years back, but they’ve decided to be more atas (Singlish for posh) and opted for the understated and classy Japanesque style.
